Markem-Imaje 2200 Print and Apply Labeler - 108 mm, 300 dpi

The 2200 is a print and apply system: it prints the label on the machine and applies it to the case, pack or pallet in the same motion. There is no pre-printed label stock to order, store and write off when a product code or a regulation changes - the label is generated at the line, in real time, from the data the line already has.

The series runs six print engines from 54 mm to 168 mm, four standard applicator types and a corner wrap, on a chassis built around a 38 mm solid backbone. It is specified for 24/7 case coding, where the label has to be readable at the pallet and the barcode has to grade.

Why Print and Apply Instead of Pre-Printed Labels

Pre-printed labels make sense when the label never changes. Once a line carries several SKUs, several customers or a serial number, pre-printed stock turns into inventory, obsolete stock and a changeover every time the data moves.

The 2200 prints the variable part at the line and applies it in the same pass, so one roll of blank die-cut label covers every SKU on the line. The readable data - barcode, batch, date, serial - stays current, and the label can carry a 2D code or a serialised code that could not exist on pre-printed stock.

2220 56 mm 200 dpi (8 dots/mm)
2230 54 mm 300 dpi (12 dots/mm)

2620 168 mm 200 dpi (8 dots/mm)
2630 162 mm 300 dpi (12 dots/mm)

Maximum print speed is 300 mm/s on every engine.

Applicators

The same print engine takes different applicators, so one platform covers a carton top, a side panel, a front panel or two adjacent panels.

Tamp pushes the label onto the surface. Blow uses a jet of air for a light or irregular product. Wipe rolls the label on as the pack passes, which suits high line speeds. Tamp Blow combines the two. Corner Wrap applies to two adjacent sides in one cycle, for a label that has to wrap around the corner of a case. High Speed Front Apply is the configuration for front-panel labelling at rate.

Application accuracy is ±0.25 mm, held by an optimised label path, automatic label tension and an integrated pad label sensor.

Traceability

The 2200 holds ANSI grade A/B barcode quality at its highest application speed, which is the point at which most print and apply systems start to lose grade. An optional barcode scanner verifies each label as it is applied, so a case with an unreadable barcode does not reach the pallet.

Dual RISC processors with a dedicated co-processor keep rate up when the data is complex - serialisation, real-time linear and 2D barcodes, graphics. The system prints and applies up to 125 packs per minute regardless of data complexity, per Markem-Imaje.

For site-level control, the 2200 runs with CoLOS Create Professional, CoLOS Enterprise and CoLOS Traceability, and is compatible with the Weihenstephan standard used in dairy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which engine do I need?

Start from the label. Measure the widest label the line will ever run and pick the engine that covers it with a margin - 54 mm for a carton end label, 108 mm for a standard case label, 162 to 168 mm for a pallet label. Then choose 300 dpi if the label carries a dense 2D code or text under about 3 mm.

Can it label more than one side?

Yes, with the right applicator. Corner Wrap applies to two adjacent sides in one cycle, and separate tamp or wipe applicators handle top, side and front panels.

Does it need compressed air?

Yes, 6 bar dry and clean air. Plan the air drop before installation - this is the one service the machine needs that a label applicator would not.
